GINGIVAL RECESSION and orthodontics

Evaluating gingival recession especially in relation to orthodontic treatment

       Oral hygiene

      Gingival inflammation

       Existing recession

       Width of attached gingiva

       Tooth malposition

       Width of the alveolar bone

       Arch discrepancy

       Aesthetics

       Projected tooth movement

       Tissue thickness/periodontal tissue biotype

       Mixed dentition/ Pre-ortho/during ortho/post ortho

Holding phase treatment may be provided to improve mucogingival health during     eruption and growth before tooth malposition is corrected

If true recession is present it will not correct itself unless it is very small and oral hygiene is exemplary

Some cases need oral hygiene only and no intervention

                 Surgical intervention

Frenectomy may alleviate tension on tissues and facilitate plaque control

                        Rotated pedicle grafts

                        Free gingival grafts

                       Connective tissue grafts
